When I was a little girl we had a dog named Muffin. Muffin was a feisty little dog. She used to love to follow me to the mailbox. One day she trotted a little too far into the street and was hit by a car. Muffin had one eyeball that popped out of its socket, she also had serious injuries internally that would probably require expensive surgeries that may or may not help. My dad decided to “put Muffin out of her misery”, and shot and buried her out behind the shed. At first I was sad, but I didn’t want her to suffer.
Why is it that Americans feel that if a person is in pain or suffering they should be kept alive no matter what the cost? Medical expenses can ruin a family with one surgery. However if there is even a 10% chance they are expected to go through with it. Assisted Suicide is Illegal in America. However pain and endless suffering due to illness is not. In a land who claims to be a free country why is one not allowed to choose death over torturous suffering and financial ruin?
I once worked in a nursing home. I had a patient with sinus cancer. The cancer had spread throughout his face and his nose was completely gone leaving a gaping open wound on his face. His flesh was necrotic and one could smell it rotting at the other end of the hall. He was miserable, forced to live in a nursing home. His wife was working 2 jobs to cover mounting medical bills. His condition would result in death. In our civilized country where we offer a pill to those with foot fungus do not offer a pill for this man to end his suffering.
