Night Journey

It was cold that night in the woods. I fought the urge to turn and run back to the car, fearing the trees would swarm me with their full arms. I had my hoodie, my boots, and a warm pair of jeans. Destination, unknown. It was all I could do to focus on the path in front of me. Trees turning into roots, and roots back into trees. The path was created by tunneling trees you couldn’t see through. I wasn’t really sure where we were going. Vicki, Jeff, and I, but we all walked amongst each other with silence for keeps. It was here, and now, that I was searching for the answers. Where I would find them I didn’t know, but my heart seemed to be skipping a beat with every step I took. One foot, left foot, right foot, here I go. As my eyes wandered, there was glistening through the rooftops of our tunnel. I gazed up to find the moon had finally settled. This was my compass I thought, when all of a sudden I heard an elephant thud. The cracking of limbs, and two lost friends. My voice echoed through the trees but no reply. Worry fluttered in my chest as my beehive buzzed. Where am I? Where was I going? How do I find a way out? Tears began to burn my cheeks when these questions surfaced. I tried to climb over the mounds but there was a portal in my way. As I shifted my weight, it would follow me. What is happening? Who is going to save me?
